Pride at Work Statement on the End of the Trans-Pacific Partnership
Washington, DC – Following the recent announcement that the Trans-Pacific Partnership will not be brought up for a vote in the lame-duck session of Congress or in the new Congress, Pride at Work Executive Director, Jerame Davis, issued the following statement:
“Pride at Work is very pleased with reports that the Trans-Pacific Partnership has no foreseeable path forward. This is a win for working families, the LGBTQ community and our entire nation. From the beginning, we made clear that the TPP was a dangerously bad deal that would outsource jobs and endanger lives.
As the only LGBTQ organization to continually speak out against the TPP, our members repeatedly told elected officials we do not support a deal that would lower wages and send more American jobs overseas. We spoke out against a deal that would make life-saving HIV medications more expensive. And we sounded the alarm on a deal that would give trade benefits to nations where being LGBTQ is punishable by jail or death. It worked. Both of the nominees for president opposed this bad deal and as we recently learned, Congress does not have the votes to pass it.
Now some in the media are claiming that Donald Trump’s election killed the TPP. In fact, this deal was dead long before Election Day because progressive organizations like Pride at Work killed it.”
