Action Alert: Protect our trans siblings! No cuts to Medicaid and SNAP!

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Late Wednesday night the U.S. House of Representatives passed HR 1, a spending bill that would prohibit transgender people of any age from accessing gender-affirming care through Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). This impacts 276,000+ transgender people currently enrolled in Medicaid. That’s 1 in 5 trans adults.

The bill also contains the huge tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans while making the largest cuts to Medicaid and SNAP - ever. This legislation will rip healthcare and food from our families to line the pockets of the mega-rich.

Now the bill moves to the Senate for a vote. It’s a bad bill period. But for the LGBTQIA+ community it is imperative that the discriminatory and dangerous language targeting trans and non-binary people is removed. By eliminating coverage for gender-affirming care, the bill not only undermines the health and dignity of transgender Americans but also sets a dangerous precedent for healthcare discrimination.

Billionaires who will never need to rely on Medicaid want to cut it to give themselves tax breaks. We should make healthcare better for everyone, not take it away. Protecting access to comprehensive, inclusive healthcare must remain a national priority.
