Andry Hernández Romero, a Californian who sought safety from persecution for being gay in Venezuela, was unjustly detained for over four months in El Salvador’s notorious CECOT mega-prison. CECOT is a facility contracted by the U.S. government for mass incarceration, where due process is nonexistent and brutality and overcrowding are routine. This weekend, he was released and sent back to Venezuela.

This past weekend, Pride at Work joined Friends of Trevor United, CWA 1180, the Central Labor Council, union siblings and allied organizations at SAVE 988 in front of Trump Tower in New York City in response to the Trump administration announcing that it would be dismantling the 988 "Option 3" crisis hotline. PRIDE 988 receives more than 400,000 contacts a year. These cuts remove 220+ jobs from CWA-1180 members and more from crisis workers at other organizations putting thousands of lives at risk.

Across race, place, and genders, we all want our kids to have the freedom to be themselves and pursue their dreams. And we know that decisions about medical care belong in the hands of our families and our doctors, not politicians. In today’s Supreme Court ruling in L.W. v. Skrmetti, the Supreme Court failed to protect our freedoms and allowed extremist legislators in Tennessee to strip away transgender youth’s healthcare. Denying someone medical care on the basis on sex or gender is a violation of our constitutional rights.

On Sunday, June 8, Pride at Work and the AFL-CIO hosted March with Labor in World Pride. A little (or a lot) of rain couldn’t stop us from joining together to stand up against the attacks on our trans, non-binary, and intersex siblings. Across race, place, and genders, we all deserve to have the freedom to shine bright as our authentic selves, and to work and live with safety, respect, and dignity.
