Pride at Work Endorses the Equality Act
WASHINGTON – Today, Representative David Cicilline in the US House of Representatives and Senator Jeff Merkely in the US Senate reintroduced the Equality Act – a landmark bill that will add LGBTQ people to existing civil rights laws while also strengthening protections for all people, including women and people of color. Pride at Work Executive Director, Jerame Davis, issued the following statement in support of the bill:
“Despite progress, discrimination against LGBTQ Americans is still a serious problem throughout the country. From bakers who refuse to bake cakes for a same-sex wedding to employers who refuse to hire a transgender person, the more visible our community has become, the more we’ve become targets for discrimination. Today’s reintroduction of the Equality Act in the House of Representatives is an important step toward combatting the ongoing discrimination our community faces.
“More than half of all states lack statewide protections against LGBTQ discrimination. No one’s civil rights should depend on the zip code they happen to be in at the moment. Yet that’s exactly the situation LGBTQ people face every day. That’s why we need the Equality Act. More than 70% of Americans – including a majority of Republicans – support passing the kinds of protections found in the Equality Act. This is a bipartisan idea with broad support and the time has come to make it law.
